Informal comments to the media by H.E Karen Pierce, Permanent Representative of the United Kingdom to the United Nations, on the situation in the Ukraine on behalf of Karel van Oosterom, Permanent Representative of the Netherlands; François Delattre, Permanent Representative of France to the United Nations; Mr. Olof Skoog, Permanent Representative of Sweden to the United Nations; Joanna Wronecka, Permanent Representative of Poland to the United Nations; Jürgen Schulz, Deputy Permanent Representative of Germany to the United Nations; Marc Pecsteen de Buytswerve, Permanent Representative of Belgium to the United Nations; Mariangela Zappia, Permanent Representative of Italy to the United Nations.

Some Member States of the European Union today condemned “the illegitimate so-called elections” in the “non-government-controlled territories” in Ukraine, adding that they “fully support the independent, sovereignty, territorial integrity of Ukraine, within its internationally recognized borders.”

Reading a joint statement made by eight European countries, the British Ambassador Karen Pierce said “we, as the Member States of the European Union fully support the independent, sovereignty, territorial integrity of Ukraine, within its internationally recognized borders. We condemned the illegitimate so-called elections planned for 11 November, in the non-government-controlled territories of the so called ‘Luhansk People’ s Republic’ and ‘Donetsk People’s Republic’.”

Pierce added “if held, these illegitimate elections which contravene commitments made under the Minsk Agreements and violate Ukrainian law. And such illegal actions would be incompatible with the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.”

The eight European countries also called on the international community to “stand untied in opposing these illegitimate elections, that can only serve to undermine the efforts to achieve peace in the region. We urge the separatists to abandon the plans for elections and call on Russia to bring its considerable influence to bear, to stop this so-called election to take place.”

The joint statement is made from the France, Netherland, Poland, Sweden, United Kingdom, Italy, Belgium and Germany.
